Biography:

Merle’s background is in farming, raising livestock, running a purebred Angus herd, working for us and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. During his time on staff, we have benefited from the long-term relationships he developed throughout the years working for ICA and through his involvement in the community through 4-H, school and church activities, the farmers’ cooperative board, and an insurance board.

The Witt and Son Angus herd started in 1948 by Merle Witt’s Father, George H. Witt. George turned over the herd in 1970 to Merle who currently owns the herd.

Merle started performance testing cattle (bulls) with the Iowa Beef Improvement Association in 1970 and continues today with the program in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

Merle was active in 4-H and participated in open class shows as well as Ak-Sar-Ben while growing up. While attending Iowa State University, he was involved in the ISU Judging Team as well as ISU Block and Bridle. Witt graduated from ISU with a B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1969.

Merle and Diane have 3 children; John Witt, Emily Witt, and Ann Whitaker (married to David Whitaker). Grandchildren: Caroline, Andrew, Emma, Phoenix, Colton and Caleb.

Merle was a dedicated 4-H leader while his kids were in 4-H, and served for over 30 years.
